The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has voted to apply for funding from the Michigan Department of Transportation to replace three aging bridges.

Without comment, the board voted Thursday to apply for Local Bridge Program funding for the fiscal years 2028 and 2029. Commissioner Dave Vollrath reported last week the bridges are the South Roosevelt Road bridge over Hickory Creek, the Glendora Road bridge over the Galien River, and the Log Cabin Road bridge over the Galien River. He highlighted that last one.

And then we have one that was built in 1959,” Vollrath said. “That’s a gem. Nice big logs underneath it. It’s the Log Cabin Road bridge over the east branch of the Galien River. We’re going to try and get that thing fixed. I wouldn’t want to stand underneath it myself after seeing a picture of it.”

The county was slated to receive $1.4 million from MDOT for that bridge last year. We’ve reached out to the Berrien County Road Department for more information.

The board’s resolution, approved Thursday, identifies the South Roosevelt Road bridge as being in a state of deterioration due to a rotting pile in the south abutment, making it the top priority of the three. The Glendora Road bridge is identified as being in serious condition, and the Log Cabin Road bridge is listed in poor condition.
