The Present Pillars Foundation in Benton Harbor is calling on communities across Michigan to step up for fathers with the launch of its new Dad Strong 5K Walk and Run.
Organizers say the Dad Strong 5K Walk and Run is more than just a race. They say it’s a movement focused on men’s health and strengthening families. The event brings together businesses, churches, families, and individuals, with options to run, walk, push strollers, or even take part virtually.
Present Pillars Director James Gunter says he’s running for the men in his life, and he’s encouraging others to do the same, whether in person or remotely.
Present Pillars says the effort comes as men across the U.S. face growing health challenges. They account for nearly 80% of suicides and are less likely to seek preventive care. In places like Benton Harbor, leaders point to a nearly 20-year gap in life expectancy tied to access and opportunity.
Gunter says Dad Strong is about reminding men they’re not alone and encouraging support from the community.
Registrations are now open for individuals, teams, and sponsors, with organizers hoping to grow this into a nationwide movement. The 5K will begin at the Pillar Center on East Main Street in Benton Harbor at 9 a.m. on June 20.
