A 36-year-old South Haven area man is in custody following a fugitive arrest and drug investigation by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit.
Detectives say they received information about a wanted individual in the city of South Haven and set up surveillance in the 800 block of Phillips Street on May 5. Authorities say they were able to identify the suspect and confirm he had multiple outstanding warrants from several counties, including Berrien and Van Buren counties.
The man was taken into custody on those warrants. During a probable cause search of the vehicle he was in, detectives located a backpack on the front passenger seat containing suspected methamphetamine, prescription medication, a digital scale, and several syringes filled with an unknown liquid.
Investigators say the suspected methamphetamine field-tested positive. The liquid found in the syringes has been sent to the Michigan State Police laboratory for further analysis.
The suspect is currently lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on the outstanding warrants and additional charges. Authorities say he is facing multiple felony counts, including possession of methamphetamine and possession of analogues, with possible additional charges pending the results of lab testing. The case remains under investigation.
