Chicago White Sox 6, Kansas City Royals 5
Mets 10, Tigers 2 – A.J. Ewing provides a boost in his MLB debut, leading the Mets to a 10-2 win over the Tigers
A.J. Ewing gave the Mets just the offensive jolt they were looking for throughout his impressive major league debut, and Freddy Peralta pitched six effective innings in New York’s 10-2 victory over the sloppy Detroit Tigers. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez doubled in the fourth and scored on Carson Benge’s tiebreaking single, but was removed in the sixth after hitting a foul ball. Late in the game, the team announced Alvarez has a right knee injury and will undergo imaging Wednesday. The 21-year-old Ewing laced an RBI triple in the seventh for his first career hit. He also walked three times, scored twice, drove in two runs and stole a base.
Braves 5, Cubs 2 – Grant Holmes and 3 relievers pitch 1-hitter against Cubs, leading MLB-best Braves to 5-2 win
Grant Holmes combined with three relievers on a one-hitter, Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski homered and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 in the opener of a three-game set between the National League’s top teams. Didier Fuentes worked three scoreless innings in relief of Holmes, who had not pitched since May 1. Atlanta’s starter worked four innings, allowing a solo homer to Alex Bregman and an RBI grounder by Moisés Ballesteros. Dylan Lee pitched a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his seventh save. Iglesias has not allowed a run over 11 2/3 innings this season.
White Sox 6, Royals 5 – Hill’s second pinch homer of season leads White Sox over Royals 6-5
Pinch-hitter Derek Hill homered to break an eighth-inning tie after Chicago wasted a three-run lead, and the White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 for their third straight win. Drew Romo hit a solo homer just over the outstretched glove of right fielder Jac Caglianone and Chase Meidroth had a three-run drive off Stephen Kolek in a five-run fifth that built a 5-2 advantage. Kansas City tied the score in the sixth when Nick Loftin hit an RBI double against Tyler Schweitzer and scored on Maikel Garcia’s single off Grant Taylor.

MLB – MLB players, owners start bargaining, 6 1/2 months ahead of contract’s expiration
Negotiators for baseball players and owners have begun what figures to be lengthy and acrimonious collective bargaining negotiations to replace their labor contract that expires Dec. 1, with management likely to propose a salary cap system the union has vowed never to accept. An initial session of about two hours took place at the office of the Major League Baseball Players Association, a five-minute walk from Major League Baseball’s headquarters in Manhattan’s Rockefeller Center. The meeting lasted about two hours and was scheduled for initial presentations from each side on their view of the sport and its economics. No proposals were made.

NBA – Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, a veteran of 7 NBA seasons, dies at 29
Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died, according to the team, his agency and the NBA. He was 29. A person familiar with the terms of the ongoing investigation said an autopsy was planned to determine the exact cause of his death. His agents, Priority Sports, wrote on social media that they were “beyond devastated” by Clarke’s death. Clarke was arrested April 1 in Arkansas for speeding and possession of a controlled substance and released on bond a day later. He was the 21st overall pick out of Gonzaga in the 2019 NBA draft by Oklahoma City. Clarke was on the NBA’s All-Rookie team in 2020 but injuries limited him to 72 of 246 games the past three seasons.

Benson took a pass in the slot from Josh Doan, kicked the puck to his stick and put a backhander past goalie Jakub Dobes at 4:41 of the third. Game 5 is Thursday night in Buffalo. The series winner will face Carolina in the Eastern Conference final. Tage Thompson tied it for Buffalo in the second period with a fluke goal and also had an assist. Game 6 of the second-round series is Thursday night at Anaheim. The Golden Knights can reach the conference final for the first time since winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. Anaheim, making its first playoff appearance in eight years, will try force a Game 7 back in Las Vegas on Saturday. PWHL – PWHL draft class headed by 5 US gold medal-winning Olympians
The PWHL’s upcoming draft class is made up of a 235-player pool and, as highly anticipated, headed by five members of the U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning team, including defender Caroline Harvey. The prospect pool is the largest since the PWHL’s inaugural draft totaled 268 in 2023. And this year’s group features 23 players who competed at the Milan Cortina Games. The quality and quantity of talent represents one of the reasons why the eight-team league elected to add as many as four expansion franchises for next season. Detroit, which will host the draft on June 17, has already been announced as a new team, with more to be added in the coming days.
