British guitar legend Robin Trower kicks off a U.S. tour tonight in Alexandria, Virginia, in support of his recently released studio album, Coming Closer to the Day.

Coming Closer to the Day continues a prolific run for Trower, who’s released five albums in the last six years.

The 74-year-old musician tells ABC Radio that the new album is a bit different from his recent previous releases, in that “it’s got more personal thoughts,” adding, “[L]ots of the lyrics are very personal to me. They’re about me or what I’m thinking.”

Case in point: the album’s title track, which Robin explains is “me thinking about, I’ve got less ahead than I’ve got behind me…I’ve got some stuff to do and I better get on with it or, you know, don’t bother.”

Musically, Coming Closer to the Day is steeped in the blues, with some nods to Trower’s hero, Jim Hendrix, and elements of R&B and soul as well.

“I determined three albums ago that I would start to allow all my influences to breathe and come through what I was doing rather than denying them,” Robin notes. “So, I’m…drawing on a lot of black music, basically, and I feel I’m achieving music of…more depth and soul.”

Impressively, Coming Closer to the Day also marks the latest album on which Trower’s handled all guitar, vocal and bass parts.

“That’s what really is a lot of fun, to do everything,” he declares.

Robin says he’s hoping play three or four of the new songs at his U.S. shows, alongside material from his classic 1974 album, Bridge of Sighs — “the mainstay” of his set — as well as songs from 1975’s For Earth Below and 1977’s In City Dreams.
