“Mathletes” from Lake Michigan College are celebrating a standout achievement from the latest competition season.
LMC says the mathletes, who engage in mathletics, took part in the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Student Mathematics League exam this spring. One student, Marvyn Roy, recorded the third-highest score ever achieved by an LMC Mathlete since the program began competing in 2010.
LMC Mathletes Coach Jim Larson tells us they’re still waiting on the nine-member team’s overall score, but in the fall competition last year, they came in sixth out of about 20.
Larson says the competition gives each mathlete one hour to complete a 20-question test, teaching the students to work under pressure and think on their feet. He says these students are the real math wizards, often going on to related careers.
“I would say the vast majority of people who have over the years been in the LMC Mathlete program probably end up engineering some kind of STEM field almost always,” Larson said. “Computer science, engineering, even a handful of math majors.”
Plus, Larson says having taken part in the math competition looks good on a transfer transcript. He finds his mathletes by promoting the program with his classes at LMC and having math students spread the word.
LMC gave us a breakdown of how its mathletes fared in recent competitions. The results are below.
