Lake Michigan College is celebrating 30 years of its Upward Bound program, a federally funded initiative that helps first generation and low income students from the Benton Harbor area prepare for and succeed in higher education.

LMC says the program serves up to 78 students each year, primarily from Benton Harbor High School. About 95% of participants are the first in their families to enroll in college, and 88% qualify as low-income.

Program Director Jacob Sall says Upward Bound has been a success, providing academic advising, tutoring, college entrance exam preparation, and hands-on opportunities. Students also take part in a six-week summer academic institute that includes coursework and the experience of living on campus.

As Upward Bound enters its fourth decade, LMC says it will continue serving as a pathway to higher education for Benton Harbor students.
