There’s a new 144-unit apartment complex being proposed in St. Joseph Township.

The township planning commission this week considered a special use permit application from Dutch Developers, which is seeking to build six three-story apartment buildings, each with about 24 units, on a 13 acre parcel at 3150 Niles Road. That’s adjacent to the Blue Roof Church and across Niles Road from the Nye’s Apple Barn site.

Because of the township’s current zoning for the site, ordinances require a special land use permit for the project. The property is owned by First Assembly of God, and the apartment complex would use the existing Blue Roof Church entrance to Niles Road.

The planning commission’s supporting memo finds the project is compatible with surrounding uses, and the applicant says the development would not conflict with surrounding properties. The application also outlines measures intended to reduce the effects of the complex on neighbors.

Planners advanced the application on to the full St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees, which will consider it on June 1.
