A 20-year-old Lawton man is being treated for serious injuries after a chase with police and a crash on Friday in Benton Township.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy was on patrol along Territorial Road near Pike Road around 1:20 p.m. when they attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle, a Dodge Grand Caravan, took off and a chase ensued that at times reached 110 miles per hour.
As the chase continued, the suspect ran several stop signs and then failed to negotiate a curve on Territorial near North Arent Road in Bainbridge Township. His vehicle hit a tree and overturned.
The suspect, who was wearing a seatbelt and was the only occupant of the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph before being airlifted to Corewell Health Grand Rapids Buttersworth Hospital.
The sheriff’s department says the suspect’s name won’t be released until he’s formally charged and arraigned.
The crash investigation was handled by Michigan State Police.
