Despite the uncertainty, consumer confidence was up in April, but this may be the last month economic indicators are looking up for places like west Michigan.

Dr. Brian Long, economic researcher for Grand Valley State University, says the cost of oil is impacting everything.

“In the broadest sense, the price of oil is reflected in the price of almost everything that we buy,” Long said. “Even a loaf of bread has to be delivered by a truck that probably burns diesel, and the farmer that grew the grain for that bread probably has a diesel or gasoline tractor.”

Long says one business GVSU surveyed said they’re hoping the war will be over soon to keep oil prices lower because surcharges and soaring freight costs are not helping the current situation.
