Longtime Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz has submitted his letter of resignation to the county.

Fitz has served as prosecutor since May 19 of 2003 and says it has been a “tremendous honor” to serve.

In a letter to Cass County Circuit Judge Mark Herman, Fitz writes that he served with many determined partners, including law enforcement, who promote justice and the protection of the community each day. He also thanks his staff, saying it’s always been their goal to work for the safety of the public and to protect victims.

Under state law, it is now up to Judge Herman to appoint a successor for Fitz.

The last day for Fitz will be May 19 of this year, exactly 23 years since he assumed the role of prosecutor.
