St. Joseph Public Schools is seeking a new member for its Board of Education following the resignation of Vice President Rick Dyer.

Dyer announced his resignation during Monday night’s regular board meeting after serving more than seven years on the board. In a statement, Dyer said relocating outside district boundaries required him to step down, although he said it does not lessen his commitment to the district where he was educated.

Dyer said serving on the board had been personally rewarding and praised fellow board members, administrators, educators, coaches, and support staff for helping make St. Joseph Public Schools a highly rated district.

“St. Joseph is not a highly rated district by accident—it is because of these people, and their impact is reflected in the successes and accomplishments of our students. Relocating outside of district boundaries requires my resignation, but it does not diminish my commitment to the district that educated me. I am a proud St. Joseph alumni and will always be ‘maize and blue’,” Dyer said.

Superintendent Kristen Bawks called Dyer a “tireless champion for public schools” and said the district deeply values his contributions. She added that while his departure is bittersweet, it will allow him to spend more time serving as president of the Maize and Blue Athletic Fund, which she said will continue to benefit the district.

Board President Kerry Wright also thanked Dyer for his years of service and leadership.

“We are eternally grateful to Rick for the time he committed to the Board of Education. With his departure, we look forward to the steadfast leadership he will provide as president of the Maize and Blue Athletic Fund,” stated Wright.

The district is now accepting applications from residents interested in being appointed to the vacant board seat. Letters of interest must be submitted in writing to Board Secretary Amy Marohn by May 22. Bawks said interviews are expected to take place the week of May 26, with the board hoping to appoint a replacement by its June 8 meeting.

More information about the application process is available on the district’s website at sjschools.org.
