The Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph is promoting the next PechaKucha event, which is set for Thursday, March 12 at the Box Factory for the Arts.
The Krasl’s Jamie Balkin tells us PechaKucha is a popular event because it’s all about sharing human stories.
“PechaKucha is a unique way of telling a story in a presentation style,” Balkin said. “It is 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide. So you tell your story in 6 minutes and 40 seconds.”
Balkin says they’ll have eight to ten speakers at the next PechaKucha event.
“The stories can be a variety. They can be about a life experience. They can be about a trip. We’ve done some that were like improv and random slides where somebody puts them together, and then the presenter has to talk about whatever is on the slide.”
PechaKucha is a Japanese term that means “chit chat.” Balkin says the events typically draw crowds of between 150 to 200 people, and organizers like to hold them at various locations around St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.
The March 12 PechaKucha will start at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30.
